my 12 year old asthmatic son won't wear a coat to school?
My son started secondary school, so this is his first winter of walking to and from school alone every day - 25 minutes walk each way. He refuses to wear a coat. Now I know that "he's a typical near teenage boy" and I see kids going to school every morning with no coats, and after looking on the web it is obviously a common problem. But my son has asthma and is very prone to chest infections this time of year and cold weather aggrevates the condition. I have bought him (what I thought!) a "not too padded, trendy, short puma sports hooded jacket" but I'm told it is too padded and even though he's left the house in it twice I know it goes in his bag on the way to school.
Does anyone know of anything light but warm (and of course trendy) that he could wear? I read on the internet about "insulated hoodies" but am not sure if thats just an American thing.
Either check out what his classmates are wearing, or just ask him what coat he wants.
Cold air aggravates asthma because it triggers bronchospasms. A coat won't change that unless he holds the coat over his face to breathe only warm air.
And being cold won't give him an infection. In the winter, people stay indoors with each other more, so infections spread more easily. One day, when he does get sick, he will have a harder time keeping warm, and you will think that being cold caused him to get sick, but that isn't the causation.
I've seen too many chronic illnesses turn into power struggles. In children with diabetes this is a serious concern because uncontrolled blood sugar causes permanent damage. If your son doesn't wear his coat, it won't have any long-term effect on his asthma.
I'd suggest that you let him learn to manage his asthma himself.
When he decides to rebel against you and do things his own way (all teenagers do that, and I think you know that), let it be in some way other than rebelling against the coat police.
You are a good mother, and he will be fine. Let him do it his way.
