UK. Extension lead in the garden in the rain? Is this safe if the sockets are under cover?
I am going to have a workshop put in the garden and may need power from time to time. Rather than putting in a permanent cable would it be safe to use an extension lead even in the rain? Assuming both ends will be under cover. Thank you

There would be nothing to stop you from taking the risk, but protect yourself by using an RCD, residual current device type socket in the place where you plug your lead into. This device measures for an imbalance between live and neutral and disconnects the supply if the imbalance is great enough to injure ( 30 ma) This imbalance occurs when there is a fault or if you are being shocked. Also check your reel for damage before use - without the power connected. Also beware condensation, possibly store the lead indoors after each use. You could fit commando plugs and sockets to your lead which are coloured blue for 230v and yellow for 110v. they have an index of protection (I.P) rating which makes them splash resistant.
Or use a 110v (yellow) lead, transformer and tools which are designed to be safer and is common on UK building sites.
