A question about Rorschach?
In the Watchmen Graphic Novel (and Movie) When Rorschach was about to die, he took off his face. Why? This has been confusing me because I would assume that rorschach would want to die with his face on.
The only other reasonable answer in my head is that he wanted to compromise. Wanted to keep quiet but because that is something Walter would do and not Rorschach, he took off his face.
Also, Is Rorschach a virgin? Just curious because I doubt he got laid in High School being the quiet kid. And after that he just distanced himself from people so... Just a thought.
Wow. These are two great answers. While I believe Omnipwn's answer of why rorschach took his face off is better, cdf's answer of whether Rorschach is a virgin or not I also believe is better.
I always thought he was challenging Doc M with his humanity, in the sense, "All you care about is numbers. You say you want to save human beings? how about starting with this one, someone you know, not a big abstract number. See if you can kill me! If you can, you don't really care about those others! 'The greatest good for the greatest number' is only a platitude to make you feel you're being virtuous!"
Personally, I don't see why Doc M gave in. With his power, he could probably have brought back the people. He could DEFINITELY make a copy of Ozymandias that would fool everybody while the kept the real one to punish in secret (and keep bringing him back from the dead millions of times until he suffered for every person he murdered.)
You might want to go back into the Answers archives and look up a previous long answer I gave along these lines (quite some time ago, maybe a couple years. But look for my name.)
Also, Rorschach a virgin? I don't doubt it a bit. Look at the way he was traumatized by his mother slapping him for interrupting her prostitution. You don't recover from something like that without heavy intervention. When Niteowl breaks him out of jail and they go back to get his journal, he gets angry at his landlady (another prostitute, as he implied earlier --five kids by four men...) for her unfounded accusation and innuendos. I get the vague impression she was pissed at him because she couldn't seduce him to her bed. She saw herself through his eyes (isn't that what he does to everybody?) and realized she was just another 'bloated, aging whore'.
Rorschach obviously found a meaning in life beyond that of sex. People speak of having a cause worth living for, or even a cause worth laying down their lives for. Rorschach had a cause worth giving up sex for!
There are an awful lot of people out there these days that see sex as the be-all and end-all and only thing in life worth anything, and they tend to mock at people who withhold themselves from having sex. They imply that it can ONLY be through fear or self-loathing. But, just as Rorschach exposed Doc Manhatan's shallow pretentious rediscovered 'humanity' for what it actually was, a preening, self-excusing compensation for not having prevented what Ozzy did, and trying to justify it after the fact, in exactly the same manner Rorschach here exposes the shallowness and poverty of those who mock at others who discipline themselves not to have sex in favor of greater goals. They mock lest they have to face their own shame.
