How does this passage relate to the dome of the rock? The writer seems to be pointing out the general appearance of the city to the casual observer that without the knowledge of the beliefs of the Orthodox Jews, and the Muslims who constructed the Dome of the Rock in 690 ad, on a site that is commonly and equally holy to both, a person would have trouble understanding what causes the conflict between the two religions today. Because the city itself doesn't seem worth the effort of people to bother fighting over.
